The Roots had a passion for helping humanity, where Dr. Root's specialty was in the field of medical research, patient care and teaching medicine, Marilyn Root specialized in working with abused women and children.
A pioneer in Infectious Disease and Public Health, Dr. Root's authentic love for people and intellectual strength led him on a path to become the Chairman of Medicine at YALE, the University of Washington & the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He was a co-editor of a number of seminal textbooks with Dr. Anthony Fauci, and the first Director of the World Health Organization's (WHO) "AIDS Task Force." At age 68, Dr. Root was killed by a crocodile in Botswana, Africa, while assisting with the AIDS pandemic there.
Marilyn Root assisted Dr. Root as he travelled to such regions as Iran, Europe and 8 different cities up and down both the Eastern and Western Seaboard. She earned her MFCC degree at the University of San Francisco. In the same manner as her husband, Marilyn had a similar zest for life and was a pioneer in interactive play counseling with children. She died at 61 of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Gehrig's Disease or ALS.

Actualize Institute functions in the spirit of Dr. Richard K. Root's devoted service to medicine & mankind. Besides being Chairman of Medicine of some of the world's most impactful universities, he was a teaching doctor and pioneer in the field of Infectious Disease.
Dr. Root's ground-breaking publishing and work with Dr. Anthony Fauci proved to be a bulwark against AIDS, coronaviruses and other pandemics to come. He reshaped medical programs and hospitals around the world, revamped national and international medical studies and trained 1000s of doctors who proved to be instrumental in the fight against COVID, amongst other debilitating infectious disease throughout the 20th Century.
Professor Richard Root spearheaded the first iteration of Actualize Institute in 1994 as an educational mission for high school students. In 2004, his father joined him in the institute's conversion to larger entity, enlarging the mission to include all areas of education & wellness for all ages. He recently retired from his educational career teaching college and high school in the Greater Claremont, CA area. Through the course of his life he has also worked as a writer, publisher, speaker & entrepreneur.
